JPL Waste and Packaging Reduction

Jack Pennington Ltd is constantly looking to reduce its impact on the environment. A significant amount of work has been undertaken to reduce and better manage the volume and handling of waste both within our business and directly impacting on our customers.

Through this process we have reduced our waste sent to landfill by over 70% in the last 16 months and the aim is to make further reductions before the end of the calendar year.

This has been reduced by:

  • Re-using as much material as possible
  • Use and re-use cardboard and recyclable packaging materials wherever possible
  • Introduction of three bin system within the warehouse
  • In house baler enabling us to bale and recycle cardboard, plastic and shrink wrap
  • Wood skip for collection and recycling
  • Minimize use of packaging materials, particularly tape, plastic and shrink wrap
  • Investment in portable banding machines
  • Introduction of returnable packaging solutions
  • Working with our supply partners to reduce waste coming in to our business
  • Changing our ordering practices
  • Most importantly - communicating the message throughout our business

We now collect and recycle a minimum 95% of all waste paper, cardboard, plastic/shrink wrap and wood generated within our business.

Whilst we are proud of the significant steps we have taken we firmly believe there is more to be done and we will continue to look to reduce our environmental impact wherever possible.

Liverpool to Leeds...Done!

Leeds 2 Liverpool Canal Challenge - Finish
On Saturday 11th June 2011 a team of 10 including Neil Hughes - Purchasing Manager and Simon Mettrick - Operations Director attempted to cycle the 127 mile length of the Leeds Liverpool canal. We started cycing from Liverpool at 4.30am having set off from Shipley at 2.30am, thanks to Ian O'Sullivan - Transport Manager for driving the minibus, and made steady progress thoughout the day. The weather was kind, with some sunshine and a breeze on our back for most of the way and there were no major mechanical problems, we only had one puncture between 10 riders the whole day which was amazing! Unfortuantely one member of the team developed an injury fairly early into the ride but the made a valient effort to reach Gargrave, a distance of approximately 90 miles. The rest of the team pretty much stuck together throughout the day meeting the support van at preset locations to stock up on flapjack, cakes and water. Support from family and friends at Gargrave and Bingley helped bolster our morale for the final push into Leeds. At 7.10pm the first group finished in a time of 14.5 hours with the last group meeting us in the pub 30 minuets later for a well deserved pint! Online donations at www.justgiving.com/canal-challenge alone have raised £1500 with other offline money coming in we expect to reach well over £2000 for Manorlands Hospice, which made the effort well worthwhile. Thanks to everyone who supported us in making the ride possible and all those who sponsored us.

A Fresh Image

 Jack Pennington Ltd - Logo
We've changed our logo! The previous logo has been used for nearly 20 years and reflected the company's heritage as a fastener stockist. Our product range has substaintially moved on since then, with fasteners now forming an important but minority part of our product portfollio. Although we wanted a new modern logo better suited to print and marketing material we didn't want to lose the feel of the old logo, so the new design carries forward a look from the previous logo.

We hope you like it as much as we do.
